The Sanctuary of Oropa, standing about 1,200 meters above sea level in the Biella Alps, is a revered Marian shrine centered around a 13th-century Black Madonna statue, said to have been brought by Saint Eusebius. The Sanctuary remains a vibrant pilgrimage site, drawing hundreds of thousands of visitors yearly and hosting a centennial coronation of the Madonna. Surrounded by a vast natural reserve, the site also invites spiritual seekers into outdoor adventures, offering hiking, and rich scenic immersion in the Alps.

Pier Giorgio Frassati’s visits to the Sanctuary of Oropa brought together his deep faith and his love for the outdoors. He often hiked from Pollone to pray before the Black Madonna, making the journey a time of prayer and reflection. His walks in the nearby mountains, along routes now known as the Frassati Trail, remain today both a tribute to his life and an invitation for others to follow his example.
