Basilica of Saint Maria in Aracoeli
4 Piazza del Campidoglio Roma
This Church is right by the Roman Forum, specifically the Forum of Caesar. It is on the highest summit of the Capitoline Hill (meaning altar of Heaven) to honor the Virgin Mary. The staircases, designed by architect Vignola, lead you to the entrance with a cross above the door to remember an earthquake that happened in 1703. You can also find another entrance facing the asylum with a fresco of Mother Mary and baby Jesus.
Entering the church are beautiful works of art by Cavallini, Donatello, Pinturicchio, Benozzo Gozzoli, and Gian Lorenzo Bernini. The church was founded by Pope Gregory the Great.
Prayer
Heavenly Father,
We come before You at the Basilica of Saint Maria in Aracoeli, a magnificent place of worship that stands as a testament to the enduring devotion to the Blessed Virgin Mary. We give thanks for this sacred site, where history and faith intertwine, offering a refuge of peace and reflection.
As we contemplate the beauty and solemnity of this basilica, may our hearts be lifted in praise and gratitude for the gift of Mary, who continues to intercede for us with a mother's love. Grant us the grace to follow her example of faithfulness and humility.
In this holy place, may we find strength and inspiration, drawing closer to You through the intercession of Our Lady. Let her presence guide us in times of uncertainty, reassuring us of Your infinite love and mercy.
Bless all pilgrims and visitors who enter this basilica, that they may be touched by the rich heritage of faith it represents. May the intercession of Our Lady of Aracoeli bring peace and joy to those who seek solace and guidance.
Through the example of the Blessed Virgin Mary, may we grow in holiness and be ever ready to share Your love with the world.
In Jesus' name, we pray. Amen.
