A Flooded Crypt Under the Church
Just a few minutes from St. Mark’s Square, the Church of San Zaccaria is a special place for anyone interested in the crypts of Venice. The church was founded in the 9th century and is named after Saint Zechariah, the father of John the Baptist. Under the church is a crypt where early rulers of Venice and abbesses were buried. The crypt, which you can visit, is often partly flooded during the year because of the tides. The church also has a small museum with beautiful works of Venetian art.
