Chapel and Miradouro da Senhora do Monte
Largo Monte Lisboa Lisboa
Highest View of the City with a Church
This is one of the tallest viewpoints in Lisbon and the area features a statue in the middle of the garden as well as a chapel dedicated to Our Lady of the Mount (Capela de Nossa Senhora do Monte). Local tradition holds that during the time of the Roman Empire before the legalization of Christianity, this was the spot where the first bishop of Lisbon, Saint Gens, was martyred.
Saint Gens has always been considered a legend though, and his story has never been fully authenticated by the Catholic Church. Nevertheless, his bishop's chair was placed inside the new chapel, constructed in 1796, after the original church was destoryed in the 1755 earthquake.
