Venerable English College
45 Via di Monserrato Roma
The Venerable English College in Rome is one of the oldest English Catholic institutions outside the United Kingdom. Founded in 1579, it has long been a place where men from England and Wales prepare for the priesthood. Its location in central Rome places it close to major churches and historic sites, giving students daily contact with the heart of the Catholic Church. The college has played an important role in the life of English Catholics in Rome for more than four centuries.
The college was created during a time when the practice of Catholicism in England faced severe restrictions. Young men who wanted to become priests could not train at home, so they traveled to Rome for safety and study. Many of the first students later returned to England even though they risked arrest and death. Because several were martyred, the college eventually received the title Venerable in their honor. Today the Venerable English College continues its mission of training priests for England and Wales. It also welcomes visitors who want to understand its history and the story of the English martyrs.
