Apostolic Palace of Castel Gandolfo
Piazza della Libertà Castel Gandolfo RM
The Apostolic Palace of Castel Gandolfo (Palazzo Apostolico di Castel Gandolfo) is a historic papal residence located about 25 kilometers southeast of Rome, in the hilltop town of Castel Gandolfo. It has served as the summer retreat of the popes for nearly four centuries, combining the functions of a private residence with those of a small administrative center. In times of crisis, the palace also played a humanitarian role — during World War II, Pope Pius XII opened its doors to refugees, sheltering hundreds of people within its walls. In recent years, Pope Francis decided not to use the palace for personal stays, instead opening it, along with the gardens, to the public as part of the Vatican Museums. Today, visitors can explore its historic rooms and landscaped grounds, immersing themselves in a unique blend of papal history and Baroque architecture.
