The Uffizi Gallery: Florence's Treasure Trove of Art

The word “Uffizi” means “offices” in Italian, originally housing the Medici family offices. This historic structure eventually showcased a world-class art collection, becoming a must-see museum. Built in 1560 by Cosimo I de’ Medici, designed by Giorgio Vasari, it includes the secret Corridor connecting to Pitti Palace.

The last Medici heiress, Anna Maria Luisa, ensured the collection remained in Florence. Opened to the public in 1769, it now welcomes over four million visitors annually.
