A Christian King among Kings and History of Hungary

Located at the end of Budapest’s major avenue, Andrassy Ut, Heroes Square was built in 1896 to celebrate one thousand years since the formation of the Principality of Hungary.

Prior to its formation, Hungary loosely consisted of nomadic tribes. At the base of the square's column and leading the charge is Head Chieftain Arpad, the founder of the Hungarian nation and the first dynasty of Hungarian kings, which lasted 400 years.

Among the depicted kings in the background is St. Stephen I. He is depicted with a halo and is holding a sword as well as a cross in his hands. He was baptized on Christmas Day in the year 1000 in Eszergom, and is the founder of the Christian Kingdom of Hungary.
