Matthias Church: Coronations, Conquests, and the Miraculous Madonna

Matthias Church has hosted the coronation of many Hungarian kings. In 1526, the Ottomans took control of Buda and turned the church into a mosque. According to tradition there was still a statue of the Madonna behind a wall that had been closed off.

During the Holy league’s siege of the city in 1686, the wall collapsed revealing the statue while Muslims were praying. The city fell on the same day.
