A Castle Standing the Test of Time

While known today as the Royal Palace, the castle has within its walls three major museums: the National Art Gallery and Budapest History Museum. On the exterior of the palace, visitors are free to walk and enjoy the views from the hill everyday 24/7.

The castle was completed in 1265 and was established to be the home of the kings of Hungary. It received two major series of renovations in the 18th century, which is the reason for its present display of Baroque architecture. The castle was then partially destroyed during World War II, recieving another series of rennovations; this time representing the more austere look at the time when Hungary was under communism.

Today, a statue of the Virgin Mary holding a globe and Baby Jesus in her arms looks over the city from Buda Castle.
