A Place of Quiet Mercy

The Sanctuary of Saint Leopold Mandić is a small yet meaningful pilgrimage site dedicated to one of the most beloved modern saints of the Catholic Church. Saint Leopold, a humble Capuchin friar and confessor, spent much of his life in this very place, offering spiritual guidance and forgiveness to thousands. Canonized in 1983, he is known as the Apostle of Confession, and his simple message of mercy continues to draw pilgrims from around the world.

During World War II, a bombing in May 1944 badly damaged the church. Although most of the building was destroyed, a few important parts remained untouched—a statue of the Madonna and the original confessional booth of Father Leopold Mandić. Today, the sanctuary includes the very cell where Saint Leopold heard confessions for over 30 years and a small chapel that holds his tomb. Though modest in size, the sanctuary offers a deeper encounter with the Sacrament of Reconciliation.
