A Marian Jewel Amid the Ruins of Ancient Rome

The Church of the Most Holy Name of Mary at the Forum of Trajan stands as a testament to Baroque devotion in the heart of Rome. Completed in 1751, it was built to honor the Feast of the Holy Name of Mary, established after the victory at the Battle of Vienna in 1683.

Designed by Antoine Derizet, the church features an elegant dome that harmonizes with its neighbor, the larger Church of Santissimo Nome di Maria. Its richly decorated interior reflects the grandeur of the period, with intricate stuccoes, gilded details, and a high altar that draws the eye upward in reverence.

Located beside Trajan’s Column, this church was entrusted to the French-speaking Order of the Most Holy Trinity. It remains a place of prayer and reflection, where the faithful continue to venerate the Holy Name of Mary, seeking her intercession amidst the echoes of Rome’s imperial past.

Prayer

O Lord, as I enter the sacred space of the Church of the Most Holy Name of Mary at the Forum of Trajan, I humbly seek Your presence. In this place of history and holiness, fill my heart with reverence and awe for Your majesty.

Guide my steps on this pilgrimage, that I may walk closer to You and grow in faith. May the beauty of this church inspire me to reflect on the glory of Your creation and the richness of the faith passed down through generations.

Grant me the grace to honor the Most Holy Name of Mary, seeking her intercession as I journey through life. May her example of humility and devotion guide me to live in accordance with Your will.

Bless my time here, Lord, and let it be a moment of deep spiritual renewal and peace. Amen.
