Salerno’s Heart: The Cathedral of Saint Matthew, Home to Relic of St. Matthew's Arm
The Cathedral of Saint Matthew in Salerno, commissioned by Robert Guiscard, was built between 1080 and 1085 and consecrated by Pope Gregory VII in 1084. It stands on the site of an early Christian church where Saint Matthew's remains were found.
The Cathedral, a minor basilica, is Salerno's main place of worship. Inspired by Montecassino Abbey, its Romanesque structure includes a Byzantine-Baroque blend and an Arab-Norman bell tower. After an earthquake in 1688, it was rebuilt by architects Carlo Buratti, Ferdinando Sanfelice, and Arcangelo Guglielmelli. It sits in Piazza Alfano I, named after Archbishop Alfano I.
