A Palace Through the Ages: Rome’s Former Papal Residence
Once the primary residence of the Pope, it has been a palace going back to ancient times when it was owned by the Plautii Lauteranii family. One of the family members, Fausta, became the wife of Emperor Constantine. After his conversion to Christiantity and the Edict of Milan, he bestowed the residence to the Pope or Bishop of Rome. Today, it is now owned and operated by a section of the Vatican Museums.
