Church of Santa Maria in Via Lata
306 Via del Corso Roma
The Church of Santa Maria in Via Lata boasts both a baroque style church at street level and an underground crypt that dates to the arrival of the early Christians and has been verified as being a church from the 3rd century AD. According to local tradition, the underground is believed to be one of two possible locations where St. Paul was placed under house arrest during his first visit to Rome.
St. Peter is also believed to stay at the location as one of his early residences with the first Christians. The place also served as a "Diakoni" as early as the 7th century AD, which were distribution centers to the poor and vulnerable that were designated by the popes during ancient times and the middle ages.
Prayer
Heavenly Father,
We gather in the spirit of reverence at the Church of Santa Maria in Via Lata, a sacred place believed to have sheltered Your Apostle Paul during his time in Rome. We thank You for this historic site, where the faithful have sought solace and inspiration through the ages.
As we reflect on the life and mission of St. Paul, who tirelessly preached the Gospel, may we be inspired to share Your truth with courage and conviction. Grant us the grace to embrace our own call to discipleship, serving You in all that we do.
In this holy church, adorned with beautiful art and steeped in history, may we find peace and encouragement, drawing closer to You through the example of the saints who have walked before us.
Bless all who visit Santa Maria in Via Lata, that they may be touched by its sacred atmosphere and experience a deepening of their faith. May the intercession of St. Paul and the Blessed Virgin Mary guide us in our spiritual journey.
Through the legacy of those who have lived out their faith with devotion, may we be emboldened to live lives of holiness and service, always seeking to reflect Your love to the world.
In Jesus' name, we pray. Amen.
