The Crypt of Santi Dodici Apostoli - A Sanctuary of Sts. Philip and James Holy Relics

The Basilica of Santi Dodici Apostoli stands in the heart of the Rione Trevi, preserving centuries of devotion and history. Originally founded in the 6th century by Pope Pelagius I, the church was dedicated to the Apostles Philip and James the Lesser, whose relics rest beneath the high altar.

The basilica endured the trials of time, including a devastating earthquake in 1348, which left much of the structure in ruins. Restoration efforts were later led by Pope Martin V in the 15th century, influenced by his powerful Colonna family, who held significant estates in the surrounding area. This period saw the church’s revival and its role solidified as a prominent parish church.

Entrusted to the Franciscan Conventuals, the basilica flourished under their care. A new phase of renewal began in the 16th century, when Pope Julius II, during his time as a cardinal, commissioned an elegant new façade and an adjacent palace. This transformation led to the church’s rededication to all Twelve Apostles, marking its significance as a spiritual and artistic landmark.

The crypt remains a place of veneration, where the relics of Saint Philip and Saint James the Lesser are enshrined. Their presence serves as a reminder of the apostolic foundations of the Church and the enduring faith of those who have worshiped here through the centuries.

We reflect upon the Basilica of Santi Dodici Apostoli, where the relics of Saints Philip and James the Lesser rest, a testament to their enduring faith. Through centuries of devotion and restoration, this sacred site stands as a beacon of the apostles' unwavering commitment to spreading the Gospel.

May the legacy of Saints Philip and James inspire us to live as true disciples, embodying the love and grace of Christ. Through their intercession, strengthen our faith and guide us in proclaiming Your truth as they did.

In this holy place, may we open our hearts to Your transformative presence, following in the footsteps of these devoted apostles.

Amen.
