How to Travel to Assisi from Rome: By Train and By Car

Nestled in the rolling hills of Umbria, Assisi is a peaceful gem that feels worlds away from the hustle of Rome. Known as the birthplace of Saint Francis, this medieval town is rich in history, art, and spiritual beauty. Whether you're heading there for a pilgrimage, a dose of culture, or just some countryside charm, here's how to get from Rome to Assisi—by train or by car.

Option 1: Getting to Assisi by Train

Why choose the train?
It’s affordable, scenic, and takes you right into the Umbrian countryside without the stress of navigating roads or traffic.

Step-by-Step:

  1. Start at Roma Termini Station

    • This is the main train station in Rome and easy to reach from anywhere in the city.

    • Get there early to grab a snack or a cappuccino before your journey.

  2. Buy a ticket to Assisi

    • Use the Trenitalia website/app or buy tickets at the station kiosks.

    • Cost: Around €10–€20, depending on train type and time.

  3. Take the train directly to Assisi or transfer at Foligno

    • Duration: About 2–3 hours.

    • You’ll board a regional (Regionale) or Intercity train.

    • Direct to Assisi: Operates 3-4 Times a Day.

    • Transfering at Foligno: The transfer is usually straightforward—just check the platform signs. The Foligno to Assisi leg takes around 20–30 minutes.

  4. Arrive at Assisi Station (Santa Maria degli Angeli)

    • The station is about 4 km from the historic center.

    • Hop on a local bus (Line C) or grab a quick taxi to get up the hill to the old town. Buy a Ticket either from the bus driver or at the bar/tabacchi at the train station.

Tips:

  • Double-check your train schedule in advance (especially on weekends or holidays).

  • Regional trains don’t require seat reservations, but don’t forget to validate your ticket in the yellow machines before boarding!

Option 2: Driving from Rome to Assisi

Why choose the car?
More flexibility, scenic detours, and the freedom to explore nearby hill towns along the way (like Orvieto, Spoleto, or Todi!).

Route Overview:

  • Total Distance: ~175 km (about 110 miles)

  • Driving Time: Around 2.5–3 hours

Directions:

  1. Rent a Car in Rome

    • You can rent from Termini Station or airports (Fiumicino/Ciampino).

    • Consider renting an automatic if you’re not used to manual transmission (many Italian rentals are stick shift!).

  2. Take the A1 Autostrada North (E35)

    • Follow signs toward Firenze (Florence).

  3. Exit at Orte and take the SS204

    • Follow signs for Terni, then merge onto the SS3/E45 toward Perugia/Assisi.

  4. Follow signs to Assisi

    • You’ll exit near Santa Maria degli Angeli, then follow the winding road up to the historic town.

Tips:

  • Italian highways (Autostrade) are well-maintained but have tolls—keep cash or a card ready.

  • Parking in Assisi’s old town is limited—use one of the main parking lots just outside the walls (e.g., Piazza Giovanni Paolo II or Parcheggio Mojano) and walk in.

  • Be prepared for some narrow, hilly roads as you approach Assisi!
