Florence's Marian Sanctuary

The Basilica della Santissima Annunziata, Florence’s main Marian sanctuary, was founded in 1250 by the Servite Order. Its façade borders a scenic square and its frescoed Chiostrino dei Voti showcases early Florentine Mannerism with works by Andrea del Sarto, Pontormo, and Rosso Fiorentino. The church’s interior, rich in Baroque decoration, houses the revered 14th-century Annunciation fresco, attributed to divine intervention.

The basilica's name reflects the legendary origin of this fresco, which significantly influenced Florence's Annunciation celebrations. The church features a richly decorated interior, including a marble, stucco, and gilded design, and a ceiling fresco by Volterrano. The Great Cloister, originally designed by Michelozzo, contains frescoed lunettes by Andrea del Sarto and others, depicting the Order’s history and Florence’s past. Notable elements include the "Window of the Princes" and the Silver Cabinet adorned with works by Beato Angelico and his school.
