Church of Santo Spirito in Sassia (Holy Spirit)

Attached to the current day Hospital of Santo Spirito, the name “Sassia” originates from the "Schola Saxonum", a hospice and chapel founded in the 8th century by King Ine of Wessex. Over time, this site evolved into the Church of Santo Spirito in Sassia, becoming a key center for both spiritual and physical healing and to serve German pilgrims visiting the Vatican, the hospital and Church acted as a center of rest and refuge.

Upon entering the church, look to the altar at the left side of the nave. Here you will find a copy of the famous Image of Divine Mercy, inspired by the visions of Saint Faustina Kowalska, a Polish nun who received revelations from Jesus in the 1930s. A statue of her can be seen next to the image. In these revelations, Jesus asked her to share the message of His infinite mercy, represented in the image of Christ with rays of red and pale light streaming from His heart. Below the image are the words: “Jesus, I trust in You”, a prayer that invites everyone to place their trust in God’s love and forgiveness.

This church is not only a place of veneration but also a center of active devotion. Confessions are frequently available throughout the day, offering pilgrims a chance to experience God’s mercy in the Sacrament of Reconciliation. Every day at 3:00 PM, the Hour of Mercy, the Divine Mercy Chaplet is recited, drawing locals and visitors together in prayer to honor the moment of Christ’s death on the Cross and the outpouring of his mercy.

Santo Spirito in Sassia is especially vibrant during Divine Mercy Sunday, the first Sunday after Easter, when pilgrims from around the world gather to celebrate this feast established by Saint John Paul II, who was deeply devoted to the message of Divine Mercy.

In 1991, the church became the Italian Sanctuary of the devotion to Divine Mercy, a revelation given to St. Faustina Kowalska. Relics of St. Faustina can be found here along with richly decorated side altars. One of the few churches in Rome that offers Mass in English.

Unida al actual Hospital de Santo Spirito, el nombre “Sassia” proviene de la "Schola Saxonum", un hospicio y una capilla fundados en el siglo VIII por el rey Ine de Wessex. Con el tiempo, este lugar evolucionó hasta convertirse en la Iglesia de Santo Spirito in Sassia, convirtiéndose en un centro clave tanto de sanación espiritual como física. Para los peregrinos alemanes que visitaban el Vaticano, el hospital y la iglesia servían como lugar de descanso y refugio.

Al entrar en la iglesia, mire hacia el altar del lado izquierdo de la nave. Allí encontrará una copia de la famosa Imagen de la Divina Misericordia, inspirada en las visiones de Santa Faustina Kowalska, una monja polaca que recibió revelaciones de Jesús en la década de 1930. Las confesiones están disponibles frecuentemente durante todo el día, ofreciendo a los peregrinos la oportunidad de experimentar la misericordia de Dios en el Sacramento de la Reconciliación. Cada día a las 3:00 p. m. se reza la Coronilla de la Divina Misericordia.

Santo Spirito in Sassia es especialmente animada durante el Domingo de la Divina Misericordia, cuando peregrinos de todo el mundo se reúnen para celebrar esta fiesta establecida por San Juan Pablo II.

Annessa all’attuale Ospedale di Santo Spirito, il nome “Sassia” deriva dalla "Schola Saxonum", un ospizio e una cappella fondata nell’VIII secolo dal re Ine del Wessex. Nel tempo, questo luogo divenne la Chiesa di Santo Spirito in Sassia, un centro importante di guarigione spirituale e fisica e un rifugio per i pellegrini tedeschi diretti al Vaticano.

Entrando nella chiesa, guardate verso l’altare sul lato sinistro della navata. Qui si trova una copia della famosa Immagine della Divina Misericordia, ispirata alle visioni di Santa Faustina Kowalska. Accanto all’immagine c’è una sua statua. Gesù le chiese di diffondere il messaggio della sua infinita misericordia, rappresentata dai raggi di luce rossa e pallida che emanano dal suo cuore.

Questa chiesa è un luogo di venerazione e di intensa devozione. Le confessioni sono disponibili durante tutto il giorno. Ogni giorno alle 15:00 viene recitata la Coroncina alla Divina Misericordia.

La Domenica della Divina Misericordia attira pellegrini da tutto il mondo, una festa istituita da San Giovanni Paolo II.

Angrenzend an das heutige Krankenhaus Santo Spirito stammt der Name „Sassia“ von der "Schola Saxonum", einem Hospiz und einer Kapelle aus dem 8. Jahrhundert. Dieser Ort entwickelte sich später zur Kirche Santo Spirito in Sassia, einem wichtigen Zentrum für geistige und körperliche Heilung sowie einem Zufluchtsort für deutsche Pilger.

Beim Betreten der Kirche sieht man links im Kirchenschiff eine Kopie des berühmten Bildes der Göttlichen Barmherzigkeit, inspiriert durch die Visionen der heiligen Faustina Kowalska. Eine Statue von ihr steht daneben. Jesus bat sie, die Botschaft seiner unendlichen Barmherzigkeit zu verbreiten, dargestellt durch die Lichtstrahlen aus seinem Herzen.

Die Kirche ist ein Ort lebendiger Frömmigkeit. Täglich um 15:00 Uhr wird der Barmherzigkeitsrosenkranz gebetet.

Am Barmherzigkeitssonntag sind besonders viele Pilger anwesend.

1991 wurde die Kirche das italienische Heiligtum der Göttlichen Barmherzigkeit. Hier werden Reliquien der heiligen Faustina aufbewahrt. Eine der wenigen Kirchen in Rom mit englischer Messe.

Przylegający do współczesnego szpitala Santo Spirito kościół nosi nazwę „Sassia” od "Schola Saxonum". Z czasem miejsce to stało się kościołem Santo Spirito in Sassia — ważnym ośrodkiem duchowego i fizycznego uzdrowienia oraz schronieniem dla pielgrzymów niemieckich.

Po lewej stronie nawy znajduje się kopia słynnego obrazu Jezusa Miłosiernego inspirowanego wizjami św. Faustyny Kowalskiej. Obok obrazu stoi jej figura. Jezus prosił ją o szerzenie orędzia o Jego nieskończonym miłosierdziu.

Kościół ten jest ośrodkiem żywej pobożności. Codziennie o 15:00 odmawiana jest Koronka do Bożego Miłosierdzia.

Niedziela Miłosierdzia Bożego przyciąga pielgrzymów z całego świata.

Niech to miejsce inspirowa do przyjęcia miłości Jezusa.

W 1991 roku kościół stał się włoskim sanktuarium kultu Bożego Miłosierdzia. Znajdują się tu relikwie św. Faustyny. Jedna z nielicznych rzymskich świątyń z Mszą po angielsku.

Згодом місце перетворилося на церкву Санто Спіріто ін Сассія — важливий центр духовного й фізичного зцілення, а також притулок для німецьких паломників.

Ліворуч від наву знаходиться копія відомого Образу Божого Милосердя, натхненного видіннями святої Фаустини Ковальської. Поруч із образом — її статуя. Ісус просив її поширювати послання про Його безмежне милосердя.

Com o tempo, o local tornou-se a Igreja de Santo Spirito in Sassia, um importante centro de cura espiritual e física e um refúgio para peregrinos alemães.

No lado esquerdo da nave encontra-se uma cópia da famosa Imagem da Divina Misericórdia, inspirada pelas visões de Santa Faustina Kowalska. Ao lado, há uma estátua dela. Jesus pediu que ela difundisse a mensagem de sua infinita misericórdia.

A igreja é um centro de devoção ativa. Todos os dias às 15h reza-se o Terço da Divina Misericórdia.

No Domingo da Misericórdia, peregrinos do mundo inteiro se reúnem aqui.
