Underground Houses of the Early Christians and Beautiful Baroque Church

Mass | Hours | Photos

The Basilica of Santi Giovanni e Paolo, standing atop the Caelian Hill, traces its origins to the 4th century, built over the house of two early Christian martyrs, Saints John and Paul. Their execution under Emperor Julian the Apostate in 362 AD enshrined this site as a place of devotion and remembrance.

A Romanesque bell tower rises above the basilica, while its interior reveals frescoes, intricate altars, and ancient mosaics, each reflecting centuries of faith. Beneath the church lie the Case Romane, a network of well-preserved Roman houses adorned with vibrant frescoes, offering a rare glimpse into early Christian worship spaces.

Throughout its history, the basilica underwent transformations, blending medieval, Renaissance, and Baroque elements, yet preserving its role as a pilgrimage site for those honoring the perseverance of the early Church. Today, Santi Giovanni e Paolo stands as a testament to Rome’s enduring Christian heritage, where faith and history remain intertwined.

Prayer

 Heavenly Father,

As we stand before the Basilica of Santi Giovanni e Paolo, we are reminded of the steadfast faith and courage of Saints John and Paul, who gave their lives for Your glory. We thank You for their witness, which continues to inspire countless believers throughout the ages.

May this sacred place, built upon the site of their martyrdom, deepen our appreciation for the sacrifices made by early Christians and strengthen our resolve to live boldly for You. As we gaze upon the beautiful frescoes and ancient mosaics, may our hearts be filled with awe at the rich tapestry of faith that has been woven through history.

Guide us as we explore the Case Romane, these preserved spaces of early Christian worship, and help us to draw strength from the perseverance of those who worshipped here in times of great trial.

Bless all pilgrims and visitors who come to this holy site, that they may encounter Your grace and be inspired by the enduring legacy of faith that Santi Giovanni e Paolo represents.

Through the intercession of Saints John and Paul, may we be filled with their courage and devotion, ever ready to stand firm in our faith.

In Jesus' name, we pray. Amen.
