Il Campo Siena Siena
The Historical Social Center of Siena
The Piazza del Campo is the main public square in Siena and one of the most famous medieval squares in Europe. Since the 13th century, it has been a central gathering place for the city’s residents. Historically, the square has been at the heart of Siena’s political and social life. The Palazzo Pubblico, built in the early 14th century, served as the city government’s seat and the home of the Council of Nine, who governed Siena during its period of prosperity.
The square is also central to Siena’s cultural and religious traditions. The Palio di Siena, a horse race held twice a year, often begins with a blessing at the Siena Cathedral and is tied to the city’s patron saints. Over the centuries, the Piazza has hosted religious processions and ceremonies during major festivals, linking civic life closely with faith.
