The Carmelite Church near Vatican City

Website | Masses

Santa Maria in Traspontina is a historic Carmelite church located on Via della Conciliazione, a short walk from St. Peter’s Basilica. Its position near the Vatican has shaped its identity for centuries, allowing it to serve pilgrims who come from all over the world. The church as it exists today was built in the 16th century. Its construction became necessary after the original medieval church was demolished to clear the line of fire for the cannons of Castel Sant’Angelo.

The church is closely connected with the Carmelite Order and houses several important devotional images. Among them is the revered statue of Our Lady of Mount Carmel. In recent decades, Santa Maria in Traspontina has gained attention from pilgrims and tourists who seek to explore lesser known sacred sites near the Vatican. Its atmosphere offers a quiet alternative to the crowds surrounding St. Peter’s Square.
