A Fortress of Faith: The Diverse Heritage of Pest's Oldest Church
This church is the oldest active building in Pest, and has survived much throughout the centuries. It contains a mix of architectural styles such as Romanesque, Gothic, Baroque, and also Islamic. It is also built over the remains of an ancient Roman fortress.
In the 11th century, Bishop St. Gellèrt was buried here, a missionary from Italy who was martyred on the hill on the opposite side of the Danube River.
