Inspired by the Christ the Redeemer Statue in Rio de Janiero, Brazil, this Shrine of the Sacred Heart of Jesus in the Almada district overlooks the 25th of April Bridge and the centre of Lisbon. Construction of the statue was approved on April 20th, 1940, to implore the Lord to spare Portugal from entering World War II. The shrine was inaugurated on May 17th, 1959.

A chapel dedicated to Our Lady of Peace lies at the base in the interior of the statue.
