Church of Santa Prisca
11 Via di Santa Prisca Roma
The Basilica of Saint Lorenzo in Lucina stands in the heart of Rome, preserving centuries of Christian devotion within its ancient walls. Originally founded in the 4th century, it was built over the house of a Roman matron named Lucina, where early Christians are believed to have gathered in secret. Over time, the basilica became one of the city’s most significant churches dedicated to Saint Lawrence, the deacon and martyr of Rome.
The church underwent various renovations, with its present appearance reflecting Baroque influences from the 17th century. The high altar enshrines the grill on which Saint Lawrence was martyred, a relic that continues to inspire pilgrims. The interior also features works by Guercino, including a striking depiction of the Crucifixion.
Saint Lorenzo in Lucina remains a place of prayer and artistic admiration, where history and faith intertwine. Hidden behind its simple façade, the basilica invites visitors to reflect on the legacy of Christian witness that has endured here for centuries.
