Michelangelo's Statue of David (The Accademia)
58 Via Ricasoli Firenze
A Defiant Masterpiece of Renaissance Sculpture
Michelangelo’s David, one of the most celebrated sculptures in the world, is a towering 17-foot (5.17 meters) marble masterpiece created between 1501 and 1504. Carved from a single block of Carrara marble, this iconic statue depicts the biblical hero David in a moment of intense focus before his battle with Goliath. Unlike earlier depictions that show David after his victory, Michelangelo chose to capture him before the fight, emphasizing his determination, strength, and human vulnerability.
Originally commissioned for Florence Cathedral, David was instead placed in front of the Palazzo Vecchio in 1504, symbolizing the strength and defiance of the Florentine Republic against its powerful rivals. His muscular form, detailed anatomy, and contrapposto stance showcase Michelangelo’s deep understanding of human anatomy and classical ideals, making the statue a defining work of the High Renaissance.
Today, David is housed in the Galleria dell’Accademia in Florence, drawing millions of visitors each year who admire its breathtaking beauty, exquisite craftsmanship, and timeless representation of courage and faith.
