Exploring San Marcos: A Convent of Fra Angelico and Renaissance Art
Founded in 1267 by the Silverstrine monks, an order of the Benedictine Reformed, San Marcos has become a staple of Florentine culture. In 1437, the Dominican monks of Fiesole moved into the convent and have been the stewards since. Seeing several renovations, paintings from the famed painter Fra Angelico can be seen in its various frescoes.
Adjacent to Basilica San Marcos is a national museu displaying various works of art by painters such as Fra Bartolomeo, Alesso Baldovinetti, and Fra Angelico. The museum is also home to an elaborate ancient library containing over 10,000 books.
