The Church where a Matron Housed Christian Prisoners

Hours | Photos

The Church is in Piazza San Lorenzo, near Piazza di Spagna and the Trevi fountain. Entering the gate, before walking in the church, you will see parts of an old temple engraded in the walls. It is said that the church used to be a place dedicated to the god of war, and was used for entertainment and military training purposes. It then became the home of a wealthy matron named Lucina. This woman created a domestic ecclecia, a private place of worship. She also housed different saints, hiding them from being persecuted, including Pope Marcellus.

Around the 17th century the church was rebuilt, with the main changes involving the floor being raised to avoid flooding from the Tiber, and the side naves being transformed into side chapels.

Prayer

Heavenly Father,

We come before You at the Basilica of Saint Lorenzo in Lucina, a sacred place that stands as a testament to the enduring faith and devotion of Your people. We thank You for this beautiful church, dedicated to Saint Lawrence, whose life of service and martyrdom continues to inspire us.

As we reflect on the legacy of St. Lawrence, who served the poor and gave his life for the Gospel, may we be moved to live lives of charity and selflessness. Grant us the grace to see Your face in those we serve and to respond with generosity and love.

In the serene atmosphere of this basilica, may we find strength and inspiration, drawing closer to You in prayer and reflection. Let it be a place where we encounter Your presence and experience the peace that surpasses understanding.

Bless all who visit Saint Lorenzo in Lucina, that they may be enriched by its rich history and find encouragement in their own spiritual journeys. May the intercession of St. Lawrence guide us in our endeavors to live out our faith with courage and joy.

Through the example of the saints and martyrs who have gone before us, may we be strengthened in our commitment to follow You with unwavering faith and devotion.

In Jesus' name, we pray. Amen.
