Medieval Church built over the Roman Forum & Temple of Romulus

The Basilica of Saints Cosmas and Damian stands along the ancient Via Sacra, occupying part of a Roman complex that once included the Temple of Romulus. Established in the 6th century by Pope Felix IV, the basilica was dedicated to the twin physician-martyrs Cosmas and Damian, who were renowned for healing the sick without charge.

One of the basilica’s most striking features is its apse mosaic, a masterpiece of early Christian art. The mosaic depicts Christ surrounded by Saints Peter, Paul, Cosmas, and Damian, with a golden background symbolizing divine glory. The interior also preserves remnants of medieval frescoes and fragments from its original structure, blending the sacred with the remnants of Rome’s imperial past.

Beneath the basilica, remains of the ancient Roman Forum can still be explored, offering a glimpse into the transformation of pagan temples into Christian worship spaces. Today, the Basilica of Saints Cosmas and Damian continues to be a place of prayer and reflection, standing as a testament to the endurance of faith in the heart of Rome.
